- Edgar Allan Poe was an American short story writer, poet, and literary critic born on January 19, 1809, in Boston, Massachusetts, and died on October 7, Baltimore, Maryland.
- He was a major figure in world literature. Poe’s work considered mostly of short stories and detective fiction.
- Some of his famous works include Fall of the House of Usher, The Tell-Tale Heart, and The Cask of Amontillado.
- After the death of his parents Elizabeth Arnold Hopins Poe and David Poe Jr., Poe was taken in by John Allan, a wealthy merchant in Richmond, Virginia, who provided him with the best boarding schools and the University of Virginia.
- However, Poe’s relationship with John Allan was strained, and he left the university after one year due to financial difficulties because Allan refused to pay for Poe’s gambling debts.
- Poe then joined the United States Army and later attended the United States Military Academy at West Point but was expelled after a year of school for neglecting duties and disobeying orders.
- Before his death, Poe was struggling financially and had a turbulent personal life, including the loss of his wife, Virginia Clemm, to tuberculosis.
- Poe’s first collection of poems, “Tamerlane and Other Poems,” was published anonymously in 1827, and his other poems include “The Raven,” “Annabel Lee,” and “The Bells.”
- In 1841, Poe published “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” considered the first modern detective story, which inspired the creation of the character Sherlock Holmes.
- Rufus Griswald, a literary rival of Poe, wrote an unflattering obituary of him with an incorrect biography memoir of the author after his death in 1849, which contributed to the negative perception of Poe’s character.
