  1. Ecuador, the official name República del Ecuador (Republic of the Equator), is a small country in Latin America straddling the equator on South America’s west coast.
  2. The name Ecuador means the Equator, as in the imaginary line that divides the Northern hemisphere and Southern hemisphere of the world.
  3. The country has a total land area of 109,484 mi² (256,370 km²). The United States is about 35 times bigger than Ecuador.
  4. Spanish is the official language in Ecuador, but there are other 12 indigenous languages, such as Quechua and Shuar spoken by the country’s indigenous people and are a part of Ecuador’s cultural identity.
  5. The Galapagos Islands, located in the Pacific Ocean, are part of Ecuador’s territory. These volcanic islands are famous for their unique biodiversity, which inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution.

The country’s varied ecosystems, including the Andes Mountains, Amazon Rainforest, and the Galápagos Islands, contribute to this rich avian biodiversity.
  4. Ecuador is the first country in the world to recognize the rights of nature in its constitution, in 2008, acknowledging its intrinsic value and the need for its protection.
  5. The peak of Mount Chimborazo, located in the Andes Mountains, is the closest point to the sun due to the equatorial bulge.

Gran Colombia was a historical political entity that encompassed several countries in South America, including present-day Ecuador. Gran Colombia was established in 1819 and dissolved in 1831, leading to the formation of separate nations, including Ecuador.
