Canadian mining firm Lucara Diamond (LUC) has discovered the second-largest diamond ever at one of its projects in Botswana.
The 2,492-carat diamond was uncovered at Lucara’s Karowe Diamond Mine in northeastern Botswana using X-ray technology.
It is the second-largest diamond ever discovered after a 3,106-carat gem was unearthed in South Africa in 1905.
Lucara called the massive diamond it found a “high-quality stone” but declined to place a value on its worth.
Botswana is one of the world’s biggest diamond producers, accounting for 20% of global production, according to information from GlobalData.
This is not the first large diamond uncovered by Lucara at its Karowe Diamond Mine. In 2019, the company uncovered a 1,758-carat diamond.
The stock of Lucara Diamond has declined 58% over the last five years and currently trades at $0.44 per share on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
