DIY Tic Tac Toe
Tic tac toe is a classic game many of us grew up playing with a drawn board and using x’s and o’s to make three in a row. This DIY tic tac toe board is a fun play on the classic game, but instead you have a physical board, physical tokens, and they’re fall themed!
Kids can practice fine motor skills creating the board and game pieces, as well as decorating them. And then they can practice problem solving skills as they try to beat their opponent to get three in a row! This step-by-step tutorial will show you how to make your own board game.

How To Make Your Own Tic Tac Toe Board Game
Step 1
Roll clay into 6 balls about the size of a large gumball. (Like the ones you’d get in the 25 cent machines.)
Step 2
Roll out a snake, cut it into small pieces, and then add the “nubs” to the top of the pumpkin.
Once dried paint the round part orange and the nub green. Paint on some Elmer’s glue and then add clear glitter.
Step 3
Roll out 6 more balls of clay.
Step 4
Shape then into an acorn shape. Triangular on the bottom and square on the top. Allow them to dry.
Step 5
Roll out a snake very thin and lay it across the top of the acorn. Roll out a second snake and cut off nubs and add them to the top of the acorn. Allow them to dry.
Once dried paint the acorn brown. A dark brown on the bottom and a light brown at the top. Paint Elmer’s glue to the top of the acorn and add copper glitter.
Step 6
Roll out a large ball of clay until you have an oval.
Step 7
Roll out 4 thin snakes.
Place 2 horizontally over your board.
And 2 long pieces vertically.
Cut off the excess.
Step 8
Paint your game board green.
Step 9
Let it dry and then you can play your game!
How To Make This DIY Tic Tac Toe Board Craft Your Own
We love our crafts, but we know each person is different. Meaning, you can change this craft to fit your needs. You can do stuff like:
- Paint the game board a different color.
- Make the game board a different shape.
- Add glitter to the tic tac to board.
- Make different shapes for the tokens.
- Paint the tokens different colors.
- Omit the glitter completely.
- Make a wooden tic tac toe board. Use a wood slice or cut a piece of wood to make a square board and have a smooth surface.

Our Experience Making This DIY Tic Tac Toe Board Game
My kids love games. We love playing games together as a family. And yes that includes classic games like tic tac toe. And since the weather has been kind of icky lately, we’ve been playing a lot of games. Which is how I came up with this clever idea to make a tic tac toe board game.
And my kids loved it! Not only did they get to play a game we’ve played many times with paper and pencil, but they have actual tokens to move around which makes it even more fun! We had a great time, not only making the craft, but also playing with it.
You know what else is cool? This can make a great DIY gift too! Either way, I hope you enjoyed making your own DIY tic tac toe board as much as we did!
