Artist Olli Hull wins UK competition to customise Omoda E5 SUV

Promotion: Chinese car brand Omoda has announced artist Olli Hull as the winner of its Designing the Future campaign, for his intricate floral customisation of the Omoda E5 – an all-electric sport-utility-vehicle (SUV).

At the end of last year, Omoda challenged three UK artists to decorate the exterior of a white Omoda E5 to coincide with the launch of the brand’s first electric car to arrive in the UK, which can reach 204 horsepower and charge from 30 to 80 per cent in just 28 minutes.

The brand crowned artist and garment-maker Hull the competition winner after the public voted on their favourite creation through Omoda’s Instagram channel.

Hull was praised for his floral design, which clads the car. It is characterised by illustrative black drawings of blooming flowers and spindly tree-shaped hands, while hot pink and black spray paint was used to add graffiti-style hearts, crosses and Cupid’s arrows.

The phrase “everywhere her foot touched the earth flowers bloomed” was also emblazoned across the body of the car in illustrative capital letters.

With its “clever use of graphics, colour and the theme of sustainability,” Hull’s design has set the scene for future Omoda models that will be released later this year, explained the brand.

Created as an ode to one of Hull’s artworks – The Garden Dress – the customised car marked a new creative direction for the wearable art designer who was inspired by themes of the circle of life, rebirth and autumn.

“As the Omoda E5 is an electric vehicle, I set out to create a design that foregrounds the natural world and the environment,” said the artist.

“I enjoyed the opportunity to express myself via the new medium of a car, and I’m over the moon to have my hard work rewarded with winning the competition,” he added.

The Omoda 9, which will be released in May, is among the future car models that embody the ethos set by Hull’s Omoda E5.

Described as a sleek flagship SUV, the Omoda 9 will prioritise cutting-edge technology and passenger comfort.

Another model with a design informed by the artist’s project is the Omoda 7, released in September. The car is a mid-size SUV with a spacious high-tech interior.

The Omoda 3, which will be released in an undisclosed month later this year, is a compact crossover – a vehicle that blends the style of a traditional car with an SUV.

Hull’s project responds to Omoda’s design philosophy called Art in Motion. The ethos is rooted in providing young people with on-trend vehicles created to balance “motion and stillness”.

As the competition winner, Hull will visit Omoda’s research and design centre in Germany, where he will explore the creative process behind designing Omoda vehicles with the brand’s designers and engineers.
