Step 1:

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and prep your 9×13 baking dish with aluminum foil and non-stick cooking spray.

Step 2:

Brown your ground beef in a large skillet with salt and pepper. Add in your diced onions once the beef is almost cooked through.

Tip: The onions should only take 2-3 minutes to soften.

Step 3:

Drain the fat from your beef mixture and set aside.

Step 4:

Cut your rolls lengthwise with a serrated knife and place the bottom side in your baking dish.

Step 5:

Mix the mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard in a small bowl. Spread on the bottom buns (bottom half of the buns).

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • 1 small (about ½ cup) onion, finely diced
  • 1 package dinner rolls such as Hawaiian rolls
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese or your favorite blend
  • 6 slices bacon, cooked, optional
  • 12 sliced pickles , optional
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 teaspoons sesame seeds
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

Notes

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
  2. Line a 13×9 baking dish or rimmed baking sheet with foil and lightly spray with cooking spray 
  3. In a large skillet, add ground beef and season with salt and pepper
  4. Cook beef until almost done, add onions and cook 2-3 minutes or until soft and translucent 
  5. Drain beef mixture and set aside 
  6. Using a long serrated knife slide the rolls in half, lengthwise 
  7. Place the bottom side of the rolls in the prepared pan
  8. In a small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, ketchup and mustard 
  9. Spread the cut sides of the rolls with the mayonnaise mixture 
  10. Sprinkle with 1 cup of cheese
  11. Top with beef mixture 
  12. Add remaining 1 cup of cheese 
  13. Cut pieces of bacon in half and place one on each roll, optional 
  14. Add a pickle slice to each roll, optional
  15. Place the top half of the rolls on top 
  16. Melt the butter in a small microwave safe bowl or measuring cup
  17. Stir in garlic powder 
  18. Brush rolls with butter mixture 
  19. Sprinkle with sesame seeds on top of buns 
  20. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 20-25 minutes or until cheese is melted and beef is heated through
  21. Remove foil and continue baking for 4-5 minutes or until rolls are golden brown 
  22. Serve immediately with sides of your choice
