Flora and Otto in Christchurch, New Zealand

In 2010 and 2011, earthquakes wreaked havoc on communities in Christchurch, New Zealand, taking lives and destroying infrastructure.

Among the wreckage was residents’ now shattered fine china. A group of volunteers found, gathered, and repurposed the broken fragments, making a mosaic from the shattered pieces left behind by families. A floral mosaic armchair and ottoman, affectionately named “Flora” and “Otto,” now sit among a field of daffodils beside the botanic gardens in Hagley Park.
