WHAT IS APPLE CROSTATA?
Apple crostata is basically a fancier version of apple pie! It’s an open tart that can be made in (or out of) a pie pan.
And it looks more complicated than it is to make…
But it is one of my favorite apple desserts.
HOW TO MAKE EASY APPLE CROSTATA RECIPE
I can’t think of anything more heavenly than a flaky pastry with warm apple filling! This apple crostata recipe is simply the best dessert! The combination of sour apples with apple spice, and sugar, topped with caramel sauce and melting vanilla ice cream is mouthwatering.
Nothing beats a classic apple dessert, like this warm apple crostata recipe. It’s the perfect combination of fancy and comfort food that is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. Apple pie desserts aren’t just for fall, either. They can be enjoyed year-round. I am finding great apples in the grocery store almost every visit.
THIS DELICIOUS APPLE CROSTATA RECIPE:
Ingredients Needed to Make Apple Crostata
Crust
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes
- 2 tablespoons ice water
Filling
- 4 cups (4 medium) apples, peeled, cored and sliced or chopped
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ teaspoons apple pie spice **see notes
Serving
- Caramel – homemade or store bought, optional
- Vanilla Ice Cream, optional
Instructions to Make Apple Crostata Crust
Step 1 – Crust
Preheat oven at 375 degrees F.
Step 2 – Crust
In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, sugar and salt.
Step 3 – Crust
Cut butter into flour mixture until well combined into large crumbles using a pastry blender, fork or food processor.
Step 4 – Crust
Add ice water a little at time until dough is moistened and comes together in a ball.
Step 5 – Crust
Form into ball and flatten to round disk.
Step 6 – Crust
Roll dough on floured surface with rolling pin to about 12 inches round.
Instructions to Make Apple Crostata Filling
Step 1 – Filling
In a large bowl, add sliced apples.
Step 2 – Filling
Sprinkle with sugar and flour and toss to coat.
Step 3 – Filling
Sprinkle with apple pie spice and toss to coat.
Step 4
Pile apple filling in the center of the crust.
Step 5
Fold edges of dough over apple mixture, crimping the edges slightly.
Step 6
Bake for 45-50 minutes.
Step 7
Serve warm or room temperature with your favorite toppings.
Notes
Apple Pie Spice – you can substitute 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon nutmeg and ¼ teaspoon allspice.
You could also cook this on a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Set plastic wrap on your dough until you’re ready to use it so it doesn’t dry out.
Adding lemon juice to the filling with give it a little tarter taste and keep the apples from browning.
Want a more brown crust? Brush lightly with an egg wash. Also, cold butter is the secret to a great crust!
GLUTEN FREE APPLE CROSTATA RECIPE VARIATION
To make a gluten free apple crostata, first, replace the flour with gluten free all-purpose flour.
If you choose to use caramel sauce as a topping, double check to make sure it is gluten free (because many caramel sauces aren’t).
It’s also really easy to make your own gluten free caramel sauce!
