Speaker Mike Johnson appeared with Laura Ingraham on Monday evening, and he didn’t pull any punches about his disgust with the Senate “border security” deal.

As RedState reported, the bill gives away $65 billion to Ukraine while doing almost nothing to truly secure the border. In some ways, it even manages to make the situation worse.

Ingraham used RedState’s reporting as part of her opening takedown of the deal.

READ: The ‘Border Security’ Deal is Utter Trash, but There’s One Provision That Is Just Infuriating

One can argue all day about whether the changes in asylum rules or the “emergency provisions” would make any real difference, but that’s really beside the point. Yes, the fact that the border doesn’t “shut down” until you have 5,000 illegal entries in a day is bad. Yes, giving out work permits like candy will only incentivize more people to line up to cross.

The biggest issue, though, is that even if those things were good, they would be irrelevant. Why? Because the bill gives the Biden administration statutory authority to ignore the emergency provisions that supposedly kick in under the guise of the “national interest.”

When Ingraham began her interview with Johnson, that was a primary reason he found for proclaiming the bill dead on arrival in the House.

.@SpeakerJohnson to Laura @IngrahamAngle: “We did read through it, Laura, and it did not take long to realize that this is dead on arrival. There’s no way we could bring this through the House…What it would do is actually further incentivize illegal immigration. It would not… pic.twitter.com/rHzhMogfgp

JOHNSON: We did read through it, Laura, and it did not take long to realize that this is dead on arrival. There’s no way we could bring this through the House…What it would do is actually further incentivize illegal immigration. It would not resolve any of the problems, not reform in any meaningful way the broken asylum system, the broken parole process, and all the things that have created this catastrophe. And…it further empowers the very cabinet secretary who designed and created this mess. They don’t follow federal law. Why would we do this anyway? But the bill itself would actually do more harm than good.

Johnson then ripped Sen. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Joe Biden for their role in this fiasco.

JOHNSON: Here’s my message to Senator Schumer: The American people are running the show here. We’re the representatives of our constituents. The American people are on our side. They recognize this catastrophe has been disastrous…Every state is a border state. And everybody knows it. I’ve been traveling the country, Laura, since I have been Speaker of the House. I’ve been in 15 different states doing events…The message is the same. It’s the number one issue…We have to solve this crisis.

I’m going to make this point again because Senator Schumer isn’t listening, apparently: The President of the United States has the authority right now to fix this crisis. He has broad executive authority under the federal statutes and Chuck Schumer knows it and President Biden knows it and they refuse to use that they could stop this. They could stop the flow immediately, but they don’t want to.

That’s the cold hard truth. Biden can do everything he claims he needs this bill for right now with the executive authority he already has. This isn’t about securing the border. It’s about using the border crisis as a hostage tool to secure more cash for Ukraine.

The House is going to set this thing on fire, and the latest is that even Sen. Mitch McConnell is encouraging his members to vote against it. Perhaps the open border advocates in the GOP will finally get the message this time.
